Last week of May 2021
Last week was a long week with Memorial Day. The house was pretty busy trying to get ready for our floors to be redone. We had to move all the furniture out of the dining and living room and part of Andrew's room. It was quite a bit of work - the couches and some furniture are wrapped up and in the garage. The dining table is in Seth's room. Other tables are in all the other rooms. It's been a little crazy and makes the kitchen feel kind of claustrophobic, but it hasn't been too bad. Jack LOVED when the rooms were empty and was crawling around like crazy and chasing balls. They spent Thursday and Friday removing all the old wood. The subfloor looked better than I anticipated - only a couple holes - and not too squeaky at all and more or less flat, although not quite level. So, less repairs than expected. I anticipate the back half of the house being worse, but only time will tell. They also found a 1906 nickel with Queen Victoria on it. Quite interesting - not worth a bunch, maybe a couple dollars, but very interesting. The work is making Jack's naps a little difficult, but we're doing what we can.
We also went to the Planetarium this week on Wednesday. Seth had soccer so he missed it, which he was disappointed about. I wasn't sure what it would like with Covid, but it was mostly the same.
Jack turned 11 months old. Here is his update from Facebook:
Otherwise, Logan had book club this week and shared about a dish he likes to make - dumplings. Seth had his last soccer practice and a couple of mountain biking rides. Finishing the last really academic week of school.
On Friday evening, Seth went to a friend's party and we (without Andrew who refused to go) went to the Busker festival downtown and watched some street acts. Some were better than others, but it was nice to get out and see thing. Jack even seemed to have fun.
Saturday, the boys watched the Chelsea game and then we went to Melissa and Thomas's house for a "Fry-day" party. Andrew and I made a couple of recipes from his food science class at school to bring and fry - donuts and churros. The donuts were 2-ingredient donuts and were just okay (though other people liked them), but I think the churros were really good. Jack had a great time crawling all over everywhere. The other boys were bored at the beginning but then enjoyed playing some games like Operation and Twister.
Sunday, we had church - just Katsu and I and Jack because the other boys wouldn't come. Next week, we go back to 2 hour block, so I hope everyone will come except maybe Andrew who wants to be fully vaccinated first. Then, we went on an "adventure walk" - aka a hike. First, we stopped at the Block U because we had never seen it before. Everyone was disappointed that it wasn't really a hike, just a walk one block and that you couldn't climb up it. Then, we drove to Popperton Park and walked over to hike on a mountain biking trail that Seth had been on. Andrew had a lot of drama because it was too steep and refused to come any further. So, we left him. He apparently tried to follow us later but couldn't figure out the trail so he just went back and forth along the same route. The rest of us had a lovely time. Nothing very remarkable, but a very shady ramble through a dry creek in the foothills.
Monday was Memorial Day. First thing in the morning, Logan and I went for a run. After Jack's morning nap, we went to the Dinosaur Park (which the boys fussed about, but enjoyed a bit when we were in there) and also walked from there over to Grandpa's memorial tree. That was a nice walk and we hadn't come from that direction before. Then, we went to see Grandpa's headstone - the first for us - and ate some Oreos and Pepsi to commemorate. We stopped at Burger Bar and then went over to Grandma's house for a couple hours. She had been sick and looked pretty worn out, but it was nice to talk and the boys behaved relatively well.
